Additionally, here are various items for homeowners who have lost their home to consider:
Property taxes: If your property has been damaged by a calamity, you need to file a disaster relief claim with the county assessor. This will allow your current property taxes to be reduced for that portion of the property damaged or destroyed.
Mortgage payments: Contact your lender immediately after the disaster, explain what’s going on, and ask what forbearance options may be available. If you don’t have a monthly mortgage statement or coupon book with you, search the Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems (MERS) or call them toll-free at (888) 679-6377 to find the company that services your mortgage.
Homeowner’s HOPE™ hotline: The Homeowner’s HOPE™ Hotline answers phone calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Call them at (888) 995-HOPE (4673) and speak to a HUD-approved housing counselor for free. They offer mortgage relief assistance in over 170 languages.
Insurance: File a claim with your insurance company and apply for assistance from government organizations as soon as possible to get ahead of the influx of claims for the area hit by disaster.
FAIR Plan: The FAIR Plan provides basic fire insurance coverage for high-risk properties when traditional insurance companies will not.
Federal Aid: Look into state or Federal aid and register as soon as possible. Know that proof of homeownership may be required to receive Federal disaster assistance. If you need a copy of your mortgage or deed of trust, contact your lender.
If you need assistance navigating these items or have questions about how we can further support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here for you every step of the way.
